The meeting concerning the public discussion of the nature reserve “Rūja Floodplains” will be held this year on the November 16 at 11:00 in Valmiera district “Sēļi” - in the little hall of Sēļi Manor House. The nature conservation plan will be available for information starting from the November 3, in Jeri, Sēļi and Vilpulka Municipality Houses. Written suggestions are accepted for submission until the November 16 in Latvian Fund for Nature at Raiņa bulvāris 31-6, Riga, LV-1050, ldf@lanet.lv, phone: 7830999. All the interested parties are welcomed to participate!

The nature reserve “Rūja Floodplain” was established in the year of 2004. It is included in the list of “Natura 2000” territories. This nature reserve covers 444 ha wide territory and administratively is a part of Valmiera district Sēļi, Vilpulka and Jeri parishes.

The territory contains floodplain meadows providing the living place for several protected bird species. The basic worth of “Rūja Floodplains” is Great Snipe whose lek in this territory belongs to the complex of Great Snipe leks around the area of Lake Burtnieks which is the most substantial place for Great Snipes in North Latvia. Also other rare and protected bird species such as Corncrake, Spotteed Crake and the Lesser Spotted Eagle are nesting and feeding in these meadows. Apart from the valuable floodplain meadows, there are situated also several other endangered meadow habitats in Europe. “Rūja Floodplain” is included in the North Vidzeme Biosphere Reserve.

The development of the management plan is led by Ms. Liene Salmiņa (Latvian Fund for Nature) and it is implemented under the LIFE-Nature project “Restoration of Floodplain Meadows”.
