Burga meadows Total site surface area (ha): 117 NATURA 2000 Code: LV0532600 Site description Territory is located in the northern part of Latvia (see Form 5) on the former floodplain meadows of Seda River (see Form 7, Map 5). The meadows have undergone melioration (drainage) and the river itself has been straightened in this segment. The drainage causes reduced spring floods and lower water table as well as invasion of bushes. The meadows are still rather open but they are fragmented in sections that are separated by shrub belts along the drainage ditches. Nevertheless the meadows still maintain high Crex crex* density and host a large lek of Gallinago media. Over 90% of the site area is currently abandoned (from human activity point of view), except used for seasonal large mammal hunting. Full account of targeted species and habitats present at site is given in Forms 8-10. Nature values The site hosts the largest Gallinago media lek of the northern part of Latvia. The density of the calling Crex crex* is the highest in northern Latvia. Site hosts over 10 nationally protected bird species. The site meets IBA criteria A1 for Crex crex* and Gallinago media. Altogether site hosts 4 bird species listed in Annex I of Birds Directive that will be targeted by the project.
