The second meetings of the Management Plan Steering Groups The second meeting of the Management Plan Steering Group for Cena Mire Nature Reserve The second meeting of the Management Plan Steering Group for Cena Mire Nature Reserve was held on September 28, 2005. At the start of the meeting the management plan expert Inese Silamiķele informed about the progress of the elaboration of the management plan for Cena Mire Nature Reserve, results of the expert inventories as well as introduced with the planned management actions in Cena Mire. The manager of main activities Juris Nusbaums informed about the elaboration of the technical designs for building dams, nature trails and the watching tower. There was a great interest about the information presented by project ornithologist Aivars Petriņš concerning Cena Mire that is an Internationally Important Bird Area. The main aim of the management plan for Cena Mire is the conservation of the valuable raised bog habitat that is highly important for the bird species. To achieve this aim a number of important management actions are included in the management plan, such as, building of dams on the drainage ditches to stop the desiccation of the mire, habitat and hydrological studies and monitoring, establishing of information boards and signs, building nature trail and watching tower. The Management Plan Steering Group accepted the proposal of the ornithologist to establish seasonal restricted area from 1st March till 1st November in the central part of Cena Mire and prohibit hunting of birds in the site. The Management Plan Steering Group accepted the planned management activities in Cena Mire Nature Reserve. It was decided to have the next meeting of the Management Plan Steering group to discuss more in detail the management plan and concrete actions. The second meeting of the Management Plan Steering Group for Klāņi Mire Nature Reserve The second meeting of Management Plan Steering Group for Klāņi Mire Nature Reserve was held in October 6, 2005 in Pope Municipality. The project habitat expert Valda Baroniņa informed about the progress of the elaboration of the management plan for Klāņi Mire, results of expert studies in the site as well as planned management actions in the site. Manager of main activities Juris Nusbaums told about progress of elaboration of technical designs for building dams on the drainage ditches and project ornithologist Aivars Petriņš reported about the bird species in this project site. Klāņi Mire is important also for plant species and especially Klāņi Lake. To stabilize the hydrological regime in Klāņi Mire and to stop the influence of the drainage in the site, hydrological studies are carried out there as well as technical designs are elaborated for building of dams on the drainage ditches. Habitat monitoring has been started in the site to monitor the success of the management actions. The protection of valuable habitats is only possible with the elaboration of adequate zonation for this project site. Three zones are planned in Klani Mires Nature Reserve- zone of regulated regimen, nature reserve zone and nature park zone that all have different management actions. No interference is a main management activity in the zone of regulated regime, but some management activities are allowed in the other two zones. As reveal the expert reports the situation is favorable for the growth of rare and protected species near Klāņi Lake. Therefore, rapid fluctuations of the water level in the lake should not be allowed. The Management Steering Group accepted these planned activities based on the reports from the field experts inventories. The second meeting of the Management Plan Steering Group for Veseta Floodplain Mire Nature Reserve The second meeting of Management Plan Steering Group for Veseta Floodplain Mire Nature Reserve was held on October 4, 2005 in the Forest Research Station (Jaunkalsnava). At the meeting the project experts together with stakeholders and private landowners discussed the planned management actions, as well as the zonation in this project site. The territory of Stikli village is planned in the neutral zone, except the territory around Dižiezere Lake. At first the landscape protection zone was planned in the territory of one of the private landowners but during the discussions it was changed to the nature reserve zone. Nature park zone is planned on the land of other private landowners and territories that belong to the State Joint-Stock Company Latvias State Forests. The zone of regulated regime is planned in Talsi District between Stūriņezers Lake and Zvāguļu Mire and on the eastern side of Vanagu Mire. Forests in these territories are not so old but there is lot of specially protected and rare plants species with only few localities in Latvia. The rest of the area of Stikli Mires Nature Reserve is planned as nature reserve zone. In Vasenieku Mire (it is included in Stikli Mire Nature Reserve) hydrological studies and monitoring has been started as well as habitat monitoring to follow the success of management actions.
