Mire monitoring includes monitoring of vegetation, invertebrates and birds. 2003 is the first mire monitoring year in Latvia. Mire monitoring was carried out according to methodology in Mire Monitoring Handbook. Vegetation monitoring was carried out in five calcareous fens and thirty-six reléves of 10x10 m size were made and peat pH was determined. Cover of plant species characterising mire status, species diversity, shrub cover and number of tree seedlings was analysed. Photos from every reléve were taken. Monitoring of invertebrates (epigeic, land snails, dragonflies, butterflies, moths) were carried out in thirteen sites in twenty-five transects/sample plots. Relative population density and diversity indices were calculated for each invertebrate group and potential threats for sensitive species were assesed. Monitoring of birds was carrried out in three raised bogs in four transects. Density of rare bird species breeding in mires was analysed. Location of permanent routes and reléves were marked with GPS. Overall characteristics of all monitoring objects were given and threats were analysed. Data are stored in Access databases. Fourteen experts took part at the project. To see project report (in Latvian) visit www.lva.gov.lv in February!
